CALL FOR PAPERS
The next conference of the Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies will take place at the University of St Andrews. In recognition of the tri-centenary of Louis XIV’s death, the theme is Kingship. Papers are invited on any aspect of this theme and need not be limited to Louis XIV. Possible subjects include:
· Kings: Henri IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV
· Theories of Kingship; political theory
· Kings and other rulers (Emperors, Popes)
· Kingship and gender (Queens, Regents, la loi salique)
· King/Queen figures in literature
· King/Queen figures in theatre
· King/Queen figures in art, dance and music
· Contested kings; kings and contestation
· Satirical portrayals of king figures
· French kings viewed from abroad
Proposals for papers (250-300 words) should be sent to the Secretary, Professor Richard Maber (r.g.maber@durham.ac.uk) by 31 January 2015. Please note that in order to present a paper at the conference, one must be a member of the Society.
The conference will include an organ recital of French baroque music and a hands-on visit to the library’s Special Collections, as well as local fish and chips and a conference dinner in the recently re-opened Byre Theatre.
Please note that the annual conference of Society for the Study of French History will also be held at the University of St Andrews, 28-30 June 2015.

Cette année, le colloque de la Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies aura lieu à l’Université de St Andrews. Le thème pour cette année (le tricentenaire de la mort de Louis XIV) sera la royauté et les rois (le “kingship”), sous toutes ses formes, y compris:
· Les rois: Henri IV, Louis XIII et Louis XIV
· La théorie de la royauté; la théorie politique
· Les rois et d’autres “souverains” (empereurs, papes)
· La royauté féminine (les reines/régentes, la loi salique)
· Les rois/reines dans la littérature
· Les rois/reines dans le théâtre
· Les rois/reines dans l’art, la danse et la musique
· Le pouvoir royal contesté
· Les rois satirisés
· Les rois français vus de l’étranger
Les propositions de communications sont à envoyer au Professor Richard Maber (r.g.maber@durham.ac.uk), avant le 31 janvier 2015. Pour présenter une communication au colloque, il faut être abonné à la Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies.
Il y aura un concert de musique baroque pour orgue, un workshop aux Special Collections à la bibliothèque de recherche, ainsi que des fish’n’chips du quartier et un dîner au Byre Theatre.
NB Le colloque annuel de la Society for the Study of French History aura lieu également à l’Université de St Andrews, du 28 au 30 juin 2015.
