As the inaugural lecture in its new online speaker series, the Collectif d’Anthropologie et d’Histoire du Spirituel et des Affects (CAHSA) is pleased to present a talk by Dr. Elllen McClure based on her forthcoming book, titled (right now) The Logic of Idolatry in Seventeenth-Century French Literature, to be published spring 2020 with Boydell & Brewer in their Gallica series. The talk (in English) will last 30-40 minutes, followed by 20-30 minutes for discussion (in English and French).

“Idolatry as the "Dark Matter" of Seventeenth-Century France”

Often, the great "neoclassical" works of the seventeenth century – from La Fontaine's Fables to Descartes' Meditations – are portrayed as the foundation of French national and secular identity. In my talk, I will show that the lingering effects of the religious divisions of the sixteenth century – specifically, the investment, and sometimes anguish, surrounding the issue of idolatry – are in fact nearly everywhere, although often invisible to the twenty-first century reader. After providing an overview of the hold that idolatry continues to exert over the period, providing a framework for the discussion of contentious issues such as the legitimacy of human (rather than divine) creation, I will explore two very different engagements with idolatry on the seventeenth-century French stage: Molière's Sganarelle, ou le Cocu imaginaire and Racine's Phèdre.
